Every job requires dealing with somethings related to itself. For instance, an officer in a bank is engaged in money issues; an engineer works with measurement of places;a green-grocer sells fruit and vegetables... What about teachers??? Yes, students are the center of our job as teachers. But the different thing from the other jobs is that our center is HUMAN. In that sense, as teachers, we cannot just deal with them by just trying to teaching in the classroom. As the students are not machines but "human", we must take into considiration of their needs, interests, moods, social backgrounds because with the lack of knowledge about the students, we cannot have the comfortable atmosphere of teaching. As teachers, we should not forget that our students are not paper, not machine, not computer but only HUMAN. With this view, I want to share my imagination that I see teachers like "gardener" who wants to grow flowers so s/he has the knowledge abot the flowers such as which place they like, how much water they need, when and how they bloom. So "teacher" means "gardener" to me. What about you?? Which occupation are teachers like for you? What does "teacher" mean to you?Let's find metaphors for "being a teacher" all together;))

Great read!
Dear Ilknur,
What an interesting question you are asking! Actually I made a research on this topic last year. This study aimed to elicit metaphors and similes employed by junior and senior students in a pre-service teacher education program and by in-service teachers in order to unearth their conceptions regarding teachers and teaching. Respondents were asked to complete in writing the stems “A teacher is......./ A learner is......” using a metaphor or simile. I have collected very interesting metaphors. But it's better not to mention them right now and wait to see what will happen here :)
By the way, "gardener" was one of the most popular metaphors in my research too..

Hi again,
Let me tell you my metaphor for teachers. I think the teacher is a "lighthouse". We guide our students, but still allow them to make their own way through the sea. We do not decide where they should go. It's their responsibility to choose their own way. But as a lighthouse, we are there to light their way and make them feel secure and safe.
hi ilknur:)
thats really a nice topic. although it may sound too classical i want to mention the metaphor of "guide" for the teacher. because i think that students should be responsible for their own learning and teacher should not give every information to them. she/he should lead them to the right way and let them search the environment themselves...
dear ikocum
ı always feel like the teacher is a "cook"! s/he has adds ingredients, mixes them, shapes them, cooks them and serves them. similarly, the teacher does the same thing and serves the students as qualified individuals to the society. yes, teacher is a cook!
Dear İlknur,
what a nice question! I really liked your post. for now ı search for a metaphor, when ı find it, I will share it with you.
